Miltassia Estrelita ‘Sweet Senorita’

This post is for all of the orchid lovers who have purchased one of our big 7 inch (175mm) pot Sweet Senorita orchids over the past 7 weeks.  This orchid is also my dear makuakine’s favourite flower, big bold and bodacious like her.  This orchid is one that we have found just gets better as it gets bigger, and bigger, and bigger!  For all who purchased one and struggled out of the nurseries with them, all that weight is in the plant as the potting mix is quite light.  One client even mentioned how she saw a little old lady walking out carrying 4 of them, never underestimate the ability of little old ladies!

The great part about this orchid is that it’s fragrant as well as be floriferous.  My neighbour was even mentioning that the scent attracted some native bumblebees, which she described as big dopey blue bottomed freight trains.  Her husband said that the spikes must’ve been strong to support the bumblebee’s weight.  Although Sweet Senorita mainly flowers around December and January, you will get spot flowering at other times.  As one client puts it, this plant is bomb proof.  I will say it’s one of the easier to grow orchids and will make a great pot plant specimen on a veranda or hanging basket under a suitable tree (one with big sturdy branches).  Now as you can see from the photos, bigger and better is the theme.  This Sweet Senorita was potted into a 12 inch (300mm) pot early in 2014 and has just gone ballistic.  Note that the weight of the orchid has even deformed the cover on the water tank!  For size comparisons, I think the water tank is 4 feet across (1200mm).
